<div style="text-align: center;">
<span style="font-family: Georgia, Times New Roman, serif;">And we are off.....extended school year has started and by the time I actually post this; its three quarters done! Summer school is such a change a pace for me; not only am I teaching preschool (yes, I have every certification under the sun) which is different from my normal fourth graders, but I feel it's the break I needed to a recharge for my upcoming fourth graders. </span></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<span style="font-family: Georgia, Times New Roman, serif;"><br /></span></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<span style="font-family: Georgia, Times New Roman, serif;">Having the little guys and girls during this short time had restored my passion for teaching and even creating. They have a thirst for learning and LOVE school. We had laughs and fun all while learning academically and socially. </span></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<span style="font-family: Georgia, Times New Roman, serif;"><br /></span></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<span style="font-family: Georgia, Times New Roman, serif;">Here is one of the activities we did incorporating counting, identifying numbers and utilizing fine motor skills. <a href="http://bit.ly/2vcaHo6" target="_blank">Counting and Identifying numerals to 10 Task Cards</a> were laminated and either circled with dry erase markers or clothespins. Of course, we had summer themed clip art. This can be a fun activity to do with your little kiddos too at home! </span></div>

This is the perfect activity for kids trying to practice fine motor skills and writing. My preschoolers are really working hard on writing their letters and holding a writing utensil with a tripod grasp. Additionally, I would like to add that I love writing in highlighter for the students to trace over too. I found this to be a successful strategy to transition the students to start writing their letters independently. <div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<span style="font-family: Georgia, 'Times New Roman', serif; text-align: left;">Throughout ESY, my assistants and I were constantly teaching social skills and appropriate behavior. Unfortunately, with the rigor of school today; many kids do not know how to play and interact well with one another anymore like they once did in Kindergarten. They don't get to play and learn to share as much as they used to and now it is impacting the present and past kids, teachers, and their families. Who can relate? It's a real eye opener when you have to teach your fourth graders how to share and respect one another with actual curriculum. This was partly why last school year was one of my more challenging years. </span></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<span style="font-family: Georgia, 'Times New Roman', serif;"><br /></span></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<span style="font-family: Georgia, 'Times New Roman', serif;">Of course, summer is a time for teachers to recharge and even though I taught Extended School Year, I am recharged to have fun again. I'm over the deadlines... I am over tests....I just want my kids to have fun while learning! I'm just ready to start fresh! </span></div>

A year with far too many challenges yet little support. Who can relate? Probably more of you than not. I am actually annoyed with myself for letting one of these years, be the one that takes me away from doing things I love, such as creating and blogging. No, it wasn't my personal life. Actually, quite the opposite...it was challenges in my professional one. </span><br />
<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;"><br /></span>
<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">As a special education teacher, I've always had challenges to deal with but this year was an exceptional one. Not all challenges were in special education; and not all challenges are created equal. Often times, just a special mixture of students is enough for the proverbial "perfect storm." The mix of personalities and issues proved to be difficult. I am extremely thankful I have a co-teacher, because I don't know if I could have survived without her. LOL! And yet I was also thankful that it wasn't just our class; it was the entire unit. Every day was a new challenge, yet everyday we showed up, put on our "big girl panties" and did what we had to do or deal with on a particular day. There was no other choice! I couldn't even count the number of "hats" we wore this school year. Often times, we found ourselves wearing 10 "hats" at a time without even switching. As I write this now, all I visualize are the illustrations of <i>Caps for Sale by </i><span style="color: #595959; font-size: 17px;">Esphyr Slobodkina. </span></span><span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">That was us...the peddlers wearing a dozen hats at a time, which felt like total monkey business. We've all been there one time or another, right?! </span><span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">I know...I'm speaking to the choir?! :) </span><br />
<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;"><br /></span>
<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">Some days, I felt defeated and exhausted. Other times, I was feeling guilt for my students that were the ideal students. (But what really is an ideal student?! Ideal is subjective.) Anyways, I hope they forgive me for just not being on my game this year. Shame on me for not. We tried it all; new behavior plans, flexible seating. You name it, we tried it! At times, I even second guessed my career choice. As much as I love what I do, this profession takes a lot out of you and this year I felt like I went a full ten rounds of a boxing match almost daily. Some days you feel like you get no support from administration and it's a losing battle. I often felt that I gave stiffer consequences than when I would direct a student to the office. Much of the time, it felt like a losing battle. </span><br />
<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;"><br /></span>
<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">Mornings were better than afternoons. We had to teach social skills ALL day long. Students knew how to handle certain situations and ways of dealing with their frustrations but they never utilized it when needed. Something always happened at lunch or recess and we were just putting out fires left and right. If only it were enough water to douse the drama that ensued for the entire year. </span><br />
<span style="font-family: arial, helvetica, sans-serif;"><br /></span>
<span style="font-family: arial, helvetica, sans-serif;">I'd often find myself saying that I was happy that I don't have my own children because I know I couldn't go home and deal with another living thing that looked at me the wrong way. I couldn't stomach another insult or fire to put out, and I know if I wasn't on my teacher game, I'd certainly not be on my mommy game either. Although, many of my teacher/parent friends disagree; I just didn't want to imagine it for myself. </span><br />
<span style="font-family: arial, helvetica, sans-serif;"><br /></span>
<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">What I realized was that the challenges that many of my students were dealing with on a daily basis were never things that I ever had to go through at their age, and tended to be things they brought with them to school. It saddens me that I had students that had to wake themselves up in the mornings; take care of a younger sibling; not be able to go out and play after school; feel the need for pure competition; deal with a parent who lived across the country; not knowing a parent; a child who needed to lie to feel better about him/herself; the need to be perfect; a child who could not control their body, let alone sit and focus on a lesson; not having clean clothes to wear on a daily basis; having 9 other siblings to deal with and fight or the attention of their parent; being homeless; kids exposed to sex, and so much more. Some kids are not parented; some have never learned how to play or share; some kids need instant gratification; some were never corrected; some were never taught respect for others or even themselves. So many extremes; yet will it really ever change?! Who really knows.... There will always be situations that are out of our control! I wish I could say that there won't be other years like this one, but I know the reality of that statement. </span><br />
<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;"><br /></span>
<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">One of the best things about our profession, is an entirely new start each September. A fresh start with a different group of students, a different set of parents, sometimes a different set of staff and/or a different set of administration. New hopes for a great year, new goals for my students and myself, and new challenges that lie ahead. </span><br />
<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;"><br /></span>
<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">The weight of this past school year has since been lifted, and relaxation has set in for now. Here's to getting back to me! Here's to our recharge! Here's to teachers!!</span>Motivational Machttp://www.blogger.com/profile/01219743068297128939noreply@blogger.com2tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8399981337036506734.post-22161465913566810612016-10-03T08:56:00.000-07:002016-10-23T10:55:28.243-07:00Flexible Seating Update No.1FINALLY! As September is coming to a close, I am able to take some time and jot down some thoughts about our venture in trying out flexible seating in the classroom. First off, big hit from students AND parents alike. I was actually quite surprised at the overwhelming response we received from parents. For some reason, I thought for sure we'd be getting some complaints, but we received nothing but compliments. The only grunts came from siblings that we jealous because they didn't have these options in their classrooms; go figure! <div><br></div><div><div class="separator" style="clear: both;"><div class="separator" style="clear: both;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgFtzHIXvboDee5pZfS204jSSxot7L64AUa7sC6jaidWwo6s8HY7Moe9hJPAXahw9VwzLAP2dlukrwRlYbABZHrHB-BwokXZaFofa2ZIF6M9xaAVGzcNwS4xLqGeOWM80YcQyTTORNW6VfH/s640/blogger-image-526758984.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgFtzHIXvboDee5pZfS204jSSxot7L64AUa7sC6jaidWwo6s8HY7Moe9hJPAXahw9VwzLAP2dlukrwRlYbABZHrHB-BwokXZaFofa2ZIF6M9xaAVGzcNwS4xLqGeOWM80YcQyTTORNW6VfH/s640/blogger-image-526758984.jpg"></a></div><br></div><br>
<br>
As both experienced teachers, we knew kids and things that might need to be in order at first. We knew that we needed rules set in place from the start. We discussed this with our students day one. We wanted to stress that this was a privilege; therefore, rules needed to be in place and stress particulars about certain seating options. For example, stability balls are not to be bounced on or kicked around the classroom. We also wanted students to know that we had the option to remove them from seating if they are not using it responsibility. We of course felt that students c<span style="font-family: 'Helvetica Neue Light', HelveticaNeue-Light, helvetica, arial, sans-serif;">an learn best when they felt comfortable and with some movement; but others may need the structure of a desk so we left a few in our classroom! We offered a variety of options for the students to use, such as ottomans, yoga mats, a lounger, foldable seats, stability balls, and husbands. To ensure more flexibility with places to work , we provided a standing table (a table with bed risers) and a table with no legs, so that students can sit on the carpet! Clipboards also needed to be provided so that students not at tables can still write or complete activities.</span><div><div><br></div><div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjHS7PsCClKHqjs3-uXuzo4cy_d_-CjgToOMDbAeNMXjUnS9OYPOVtQF5T98gJtQsR5CouCRF3asxAql3uZKjPY-AbymnRTzxOjbF4X07VrrPSXiAN_p071xwVfzjAbbOF0G9RqPaJFRECr/s640/blogger-image-943932611.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjHS7PsCClKHqjs3-uXuzo4cy_d_-CjgToOMDbAeNMXjUnS9OYPOVtQF5T98gJtQsR5CouCRF3asxAql3uZKjPY-AbymnRTzxOjbF4X07VrrPSXiAN_p071xwVfzjAbbOF0G9RqPaJFRECr/s640/blogger-image-943932611.jpg"></a></div><br>
As with anything new; this is a learning experience for myself and my co-teacher. These are the things we learned.<br>
<br>
1. Certain seating options need to be located in a certain area of the classroom. For example, certain chairs like our chairs with wheels, need to stay in their location. We found that certain students loved certain chairs yet wanted to move them around the room after EVERY subject, and too much time was used to get them settled are start of a new lesson! </div><div><br></div><div>2. Often times as we were teaching, kids would be all over the classroom and we realized!they simply could not focus! We decided that for whole group instruction, they needed to be in certain spots in the classroom. Likewise, certain spots were off limits too during this instruction too! As an inclusion classroom, some students needed modifications that were more challenging for me to provide when they were all over the classroom. This allows me to work smarter, not harder. Therefore, larger tables needed to be used during testing. </div><div>
<br>3. We realized that we needed more desks! Some students actually prefer an actual desk to call their own. This would have been me as a child! Quote simply, some had to have their own working spot, especially to help with the organization of their supplies. Even though we had certain spots in our classroom allocated for certain supplies, and students were given their own bin; this still posed to be a problem. Some also could not handle sitting with friends, but if they were moved to a desk, they clearly understood it was for their benefit! <br><br>4. We realized that the variety of choices could be considered as a negative too! Some students became overstimulated and overly concerned if they were able to get certain seating, and it became a problem with bickering and the like. We tried to combat this problem, by allowing only our two helpers of the week to be allowed in sit in certain options like our lounger! Additionally, there was a need to clarify a need to switch seating after a certain lesson.</div><div><br></div><div>5. We also had to clarify the need to respect our seating options. These cost of these options, came out of our pockets and there was a need to reiterate to respect any and all "furniture". No placing feet on desks, chairs. No laying on options that were meant to sit on! No kicking ottomans! No tilting in chairs with four legs (we actually lost a couple of stools d<span style="font-family: 'Helvetica Neue Light', HelveticaNeue-Light, helvetica, arial, sans-serif;">ue to bent legs.)</span></div><div><br>6. Some students were using multiple seating options at a time; that too needed to be addressed! This proved to destroy some of our options and kept other students from using these options! <br><br>7. Finally, some seating needed to be taken away to later be reintroduced back into our classroom. For example, students were not using the stability balls correctly. Since being a hot commodity, we felt the need to remove them from our classroom. This again, goes back to respecting our items! As students can demonstrate their respect for other seating options, we will slowly reintroduce the stability balls! </div><div><div class="separator" style="clear: both;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhltTSDtY0R7izmcebccOZEuqlsMb7cTp461irdNlraDboFg7tSZHoU-rziMRDjfBhGshqNH0LLNh_dxhu9iZhAT8-oMeOygK1vOox2gacJOMdNq92tAOGIIKEfQC9ZyWpDrB9tWY2KHGU8/s640/blogger-image-2114691997.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhltTSDtY0R7izmcebccOZEuqlsMb7cTp461irdNlraDboFg7tSZHoU-rziMRDjfBhGshqNH0LLNh_dxhu9iZhAT8-oMeOygK1vOox2gacJOMdNq92tAOGIIKEfQC9ZyWpDrB9tWY2KHGU8/s640/blogger-image-2114691997.jpg"></a></div><br></div><div><br></div><div>As for now, with having worked out a few speed bumps, we are all smiles (for now).... More to come in the future! <br>

I think I need to go out into the world, because I have been glued to my computer ALL of Labor Day WEEKEND! I have been working on my third grade math interactive notebook for what seems like forever. Ok, not forever, but a really, really, really long time. I had created notes and interactives for my students last school year because I felt it would be something they could go back to and use as a reference and even enjoy doing the activities. Even though, I had it all saved I didn't have it all together organized. <br />
<br />
It wasn't until recently that I had a parent of one of my students ask if I was going to sell my notes and foldables on Teachers Pay Teacher. She happens to be a third grade teacher in another district. Not only was I excited; I was flattered! And this is where the last two weekends of my life have been.....in front of this computer. I'm even shocked I'm sitting here now, writing this post! I just can't contain my excitement! Who knows what I'm talking about? <br />
<br />
<br />
Literally, when this was officially uploaded (like 10 minutes ago); I SCREAMED!!!!! What a relief! Picture me doing all of those happy dances from the 90's. Seriously, I did that!<br />

Back to school already?O-Emoji! I mean, OMG! Back to School is upon us....Whomp, whomp! New school year means a fresh start; although not if you follow your kids up to the next grade level. I will be doing just that; moving from third to fourth grade. I am NOT looping with my kids, but I will have some of the same students I had last year (I hope they aren't too disappointed.....some of them might be, as I know the tricks some of them like to pull). <br />
<br />
Anyways, being that I will have some of the same students, I needed to up my Back to School activities game. With being on trend, I wanted to do something fun with emojis. Something simple, but would still include how they are feeling about their first day of school. Will they be nervous, surprised, excited about etc?! (P.S - Writing tasks using emojis will be coming at a later date.)<br />
<br />

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
One of my favorite back to school activities that I love, Stump your Teacher! It is similar to Two Truths and a Lie; I just have students list three truths. This is such a fun activity to get to know your students. Some of them can get very creative and I love trying to figure out what they are fibbing about. It always gets a lot of laughs. </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
Since back to school activities are often about the teachers getting to know the students, I find that the students also like to know a little about us too. Due to that reason, I have created a teacher true and false. I have kept it fairly generic; however, you can recreate it to make it more specific to you :) Again, this is another classroom favorite that tends to get a few laughs. </div>

<br /></div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
For the past nine summers, I have been fortunate enough to teach during our Extended School Year program. Extended School Year (ESY) is offered to special education students that need to continue to work on their IEP goals during the summer because they could digress. It is often offered to students that are in self-contained classroom settings during the school year, or for students that could continue to use services (Occupational Therapy, Speech and Language, and Physical Therapy). Out of the nine years, I have been teaching ESY, I have only taught what I was teaching during the school year once. Yes, ONLY ONE TIME. During ESY, I have taught in the following programs; Preschool Disabilities, Autistic Classroom, Learning and Language Disabilities, and Multiply Disabled. </div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
These experiences have made me a BETTER teacher, no doubt. Why do I say this? I do because, you are challenged to a new degree. You learn more from others, such as assistants that are in these type of programs throughout the school year. You become experienced in working with varying abilities (notice I did not say disabilities!); different age levels; different obstacles. </div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
In my twelve year career as a teacher, I have primarily taught inclusion at the upper elementary level. So when you are in an entire new setting, you tend to appreciate what you have throughout the school year and have respect for those that do it day in and day out. For example, I LOVED teaching the autistic classroom during the summer, but it is another thing to be a teacher in that classroom during a FULL day during the school year. You learn to respect the challenge that these teachers face daily. </div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
A benefit I would add, is that it is a nice way to REFRESH yourself as a teacher. Let me explain.....When I experienced my most challenging year as a teacher in sixth grade, I seriously wanted to walk out on my job twice, no lie. I literally did cartwheels on the front lawn of building as the buses drove away on the last day of school. That summer I was given the job of teaching a Preschool Disabilities classroom for ESY. Can I just say, working with those kids was the breath of fresh air that I NEEDED. Working with those 3 and 4 year old during those four short weeks reaffirmed why I got into teaching in the first place. </div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
Change is GOOD sometimes (at least during the summer months). Don't get me wrong, I cannot stand moving from different grades or even different classrooms from year to year because it IS A LOT OF WORK. But, sometimes teachers need change. This is the small dose of change that is good for me. Too often, I have seen teachers become complacent and set in their ways. In MY opinion, if you have been in the same grade level for 20 years, it's quite easy to say that teaching one grade over another is easier. But if you have had a change every so often, you tend to appreciate how hard others have to work too! I can tell you firsthand, that teaching preschoolers how to identify letters and count seems easy enough, but it IS NOT! Preschool teachers are teaching these students the fundamentals of subject areas, but they also how to teach students how to stand in a line, walk in the hallway, proper ways of going to the bathroom, how to raise their hand, how to take turns, how to be respectful, how to be a good friend; silly things that teachers in upper elementary can take for granted. </div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
I will never say one grade is easier than another. Teaching ANY grade is challenging; but for different reasons. Unfortunately, it feels that if you teach a TESTED grade, you are under more pressure. So I can see where there is a divide; but just be open-minded and know that everyone's job may be a bit different; but they are all still difficult. I'm thankful that I have this reminder every summer! </div>

This game was introduced to me by my good friend, Jill! It is a great way to review a skill or check students' understanding that gives immediate feedback.<br />
<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
My students love games and even more so when technology is incorporated! As a teacher I can sign up for FREE; create my own account; create a Kahoot game or check a ton of other Kahoots that fellow teachers have created and use with my class. </div>
<div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEj02zntwqGZyn1oKbjdSeb2kA1dGNXY9NJAcYoT33SbUMtwIjPkWx12jTMdqNva65sAUe2pnfjAUxCuHi-rzIkzyVYcCaHMJJ2CBDz6y_ZGDChaZ7eud8k4zgHzm9MFv1Kiut3cIY7bPCKy/s640/blogger-image-1744897229.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEj02zntwqGZyn1oKbjdSeb2kA1dGNXY9NJAcYoT33SbUMtwIjPkWx12jTMdqNva65sAUe2pnfjAUxCuHi-rzIkzyVYcCaHMJJ2CBDz6y_ZGDChaZ7eud8k4zgHzm9MFv1Kiut3cIY7bPCKy/s640/blogger-image-1744897229.jpg" /></a></div>
</div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
I can easily create questions and provide four different responses. I check off which one is the correct answer. Instead of ABCD choices; shape/colors are the responses. Each question can be given a time limit as well! I can create as many or as few questions as possible. It is extremely <span style="font-family: "helvetica neue light" , , "helvetica" , "arial" , sans-serif;">easy to do and very user friendly. </span></div>
<div>
<span style="font-family: "helvetica neue light" , , "helvetica" , "arial" , sans-serif;"><br /></span></div>
<div>
<span style="font-family: "helvetica neue light" , , "helvetica" , "arial" , sans-serif;">Here's how it works.... Once I found a game or created one; I start the game. I project my game onto my class overhead projector. Students have to enter the game pin on their own device to get the exact game! This allows for connectivity and interaction! Students are asked to put in a nickname and once they join. As a class, we can see the names of those that have joined, as well as the number of participants that is displayed for all to see on the overhead. My classroom has ten iPads; so I either have students pair up or borrow iPads from another class! Personally, I prefer the latter so that all students are engaged! </span></div>
<div>
<span style="font-family: "helvetica neue light" , , "helvetica" , "arial" , sans-serif;"><br /></span></div>
<div>
<span style="font-family: "helvetica neue light" , , "helvetica" , "arial" , sans-serif;">What I love about the game is that the question and answer choices are only on the teachers version which is displayed for all students to see. The student devices only show the shape/color of the answer choices! </span></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both;">
<br /></div>
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both;">
</div>

<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both;">
As students answer, the number of participant responses pop up on the teacher version; therefore, I know how many answered quickly by either knowing it just trying to rush. I know this because after the time for each question is up; a bar graph shows up displaying the number of students that got the correct answer and the number of students that answered each of the other responses. If I am in the back of the room, I can easily see who got answers incorrect because their screen is red and will remain that way until I move into the next question. This provides me with quick feedback, and I know which students that I need to continue working in the particular skill with during guided reading/math groups or for intervention purposes. Since each child provided a nickname, each student is awarded points for how quickly they answered the correct response. On the screen, it will show the leaderboard after each question based on their point value. It even tells each student what place they are in on their individual devices. </div>

The students proclaimed this as their favorite classroom game all school year. I can understand why.... It is a must try classroom tool. It motivates and gets all students engaged especially as we wind down the year! I would love to hear your experiences with the game too, so please be sure to comment!!!</div>

This is the first time that they are taking a state assessment; so their anxiety is at an all time high! It's this time of year that I use my Motivational labels along with a small treat to let them know that they can do this and ROCK that assessment. You can find them <a href="https://www.teacherspayteachers.com/Product/Motivational-Treat-Labels-for-Testing-1766689" target="_blank">here</a> at my store for FREE! My students have loved the little motivators in years past; yours might too. Check them out!<br />

<div>
<br></div>
<div>
Rewind back to August 2015, I had recently read The Book Whisperer by Donalyn Miller. (BTW, if you have not read this book, you are missing out!!!). The book introduces the 40 Book Challenge; where you challenge students to read 40 books during the school year from different genres (future post in that later). </div>
<div>
As a special education teacher, I often have very reluctant readers because it is often a challenging task for most of my students. I was determined this school year to get my students to love reading! But how?! </div>
<div>
<br></div>
<div>
At first, my class of third graders were not happy to hear of this challenge and thought one book was a lot to read during the school year. So... I did some brainstorming for activities we could do to get the kids excited about reading. Well, the number one activity on the list that we do is Flashlight Friday.</div>
<div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjN8xdQz8Yxtt4sP7fxUKTANK9ftOU-6Czw5qhJ19ICp8vKbj-aK0R617gAs060jeGjxWIpBdCh7jYwYY-31JjX494Ps9vy12GeLJgKcOdxkinslKBnm3s71Ll_BBaxX5MQWKrcxTLhX3Ic/s640/blogger-image--1725972888.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjN8xdQz8Yxtt4sP7fxUKTANK9ftOU-6Czw5qhJ19ICp8vKbj-aK0R617gAs060jeGjxWIpBdCh7jYwYY-31JjX494Ps9vy12GeLJgKcOdxkinslKBnm3s71Ll_BBaxX5MQWKrcxTLhX3Ic/s640/blogger-image--1725972888.jpg"></a></div><br></div>

There is just something special about getting cozy in your classroom, turn out the lights and reading with a flashlight! The students love to go under their desks, go in dark corners, and just READ... Ahhhhh! I found some good quality mini- flashlights at Marshall's and a pack of four finger lights at the Dollar Tree that students love just as much! </div>
<div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both;"><div class="separator" style="clear: both;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiU4aVnVTMd9UDtmlArB_qo_cgmbHyngZq4d-4wpkCVG-q_usUuBrY6EOKxmqzHu-oHQxcdnJUsCeTMlKVKpXNDCGqiIVnPOdWzGEUi2v2yWtmUGBWPr-cwHKrZw1PWhObmOVCzEsYsjzxF/s640/blogger-image-1224867600.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiU4aVnVTMd9UDtmlArB_qo_cgmbHyngZq4d-4wpkCVG-q_usUuBrY6EOKxmqzHu-oHQxcdnJUsCeTMlKVKpXNDCGqiIVnPOdWzGEUi2v2yWtmUGBWPr-cwHKrZw1PWhObmOVCzEsYsjzxF/s640/blogger-image-1224867600.jpg"></a></div><br></div><br></div>

My co-teacher and I do other activities too. We do a snack and chat where the students share the book they're reading and provide a synopsis for their small group of classmates. This is for other students to explore different books that they might not normally pick out on their own! If their peers recommend a book, then it becomes a must read! The teachers provide the snack and allow time for the kids to chat about their books! Students also provide book commercials for their books; another way to get other students intrigued about a story! This "sells" the book to the students without giving the entire storyline away! My students even love reading to me; which totally makes this heart smile. I love what this challenge has done for my students. students that struggle, I have created a template for students to follow which you can find <a href="https://www.teacherspayteachers.com/Product/The-40-Book-Challenge-Inspired-Activities-2109927" target="_blank">here</a>! </div>

Even the simplest of ideas, can get students EXCITED to read! For younger kids, <span style="font-family: "helvetica neue light" , , "helvetica" , "arial" , sans-serif;">you could have students bring in a stuffed animal, doll, or action figure to read to aloud. You can also pair up varying grade levels for Buddy Reading. Contests are always fun too! Students certainly love a bit of competition.</span></div>

<span style="font-family: "helvetica neue light" , , "helvetica" , "arial" , sans-serif;">Back in January, my co-teacher and I decided to ask the students how they now feel about the 40 book challenge; and we were so happy and surprised how their feelings towards reading has changed! </span></div><div><span style="font-family: "helvetica neue light" , , "helvetica" , "arial" , sans-serif;"><div class="separator" style="clear: both;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEi2pZqPpENg8pHIRnsnsbIJo4GxFmtOELEI5yQ79W16kEjqmWUpLRwEYKkQ7I0pbtLXvOZkahLDliLqNzgtoaoPRSFBYi4ZqvIhumdbYoIGHDV0SuUVtecYlA4hUEJwk0LcNE4qtmHP4hJd/s640/blogger-image-1202620171.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEi2pZqPpENg8pHIRnsnsbIJo4GxFmtOELEI5yQ79W16kEjqmWUpLRwEYKkQ7I0pbtLXvOZkahLDliLqNzgtoaoPRSFBYi4ZqvIhumdbYoIGHDV0SuUVtecYlA4hUEJwk0LcNE4qtmHP4hJd/s640/blogger-image-1202620171.jpg"></a></div><br></span></div>

I am in the sharing mood; so I have a flash freebie for today! I am sharing my <i>Multiplication Word Problem: Winter Edition</i>. The word problems all relate to the winter theme; hot chocolate, ice skating, snowball fights, etc.... I truly made this for my students to use and practice their multiplication skills, but also working on their reading skills. Numbers in the word problem are not always in standard form, but also word form and they must truly understand the question. <br />

It's a favorite of the kids too! I have adapted it for all subject areas; so you can too. It's a SNOWBALL fight!!!! A perfect review game for the kids to get up and moving around the room; especially since we have had quite a few inside recess days lately! It has F-U-N written all over it!<br />

Today's skill was math.... Adding and subtracting three digit numbers with regrouping! All you need is scrap paper (who doesn't have a ton of that around?!). For this Math review, I had students solve different regrouping problems. After they solve it on paper they rolled it up into a ball. They can do any number of problems you would like. The more problems solved; the higher the number of "snowballs". I have kids spread out to the corners of the room and start their "snowball fight". They love getting each other. They love "hiding" behind desks, sneaking up on people, and then some... After a few minutes of fun, students have to get the same number of snowballs they through in the snowball fight! Chances are; they will get different problems!</div>

Students will have to check one another's work and explain how they are correct or how to fix it and explain what they did wrong. The students don't know who it is from but it is a learning experience; since we review those problems as a class! They explain it to the class under our document camera. A lot of my students love playing teacher and this is the perfect opportunity for that!</div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
There are so many ways to adapt this game... Vocabulary review, spelling practice, writer's notebook activity such as adding on to sentences to create a group story, etc.... Be creative! </div>

I would love to know what you do for review that your students love?! I know grudge ball is another favorite of ours. Please share what works for you or other indoor activities that are perfect for the dreaded cold weather inside recess. </div>

For those of you that have no idea what Periscope is, it is a social media site that provides live broadcasts. If you can't join in on the live broadcast, the site will save it up to 24 hours. People can join in on the broadcast and ask questions, make comments, and so on. You can follow certain people and get notifications about their broadcasts. I didn't hear of this site until I started selling Rodan and Fields. My team started to use this app/ site as an online networking tool. It wasn't until I started to dig further that other Teacher Pay Teacher authors were getting in on the hype too. <br />
<br />
So today, I made my very first Periscope. You can go back and view it and follow me on Periscope and just type in <i>Katie@Motivational Ms Mac </i>and then my mug will show up....LOL! Much like my blog, I don't want it to just be about teaching. I would also like for it to be scopes on some of my interests outside of teaching, such as working out, recipes, skincare, health, family, etc.... My first scope was stating just that; my ultimate goal for using the site. I was a tad nervous, so please don't judge. (I did say I was an overachiever and someone commented that I obviously wasn't "modest huh?!") If you know anything about me, you know that I often take on too much, but I truly feel that is when I work best. C'mon, what teachers do you know that aren't overachievers and total Type A personalities?! It can be looked at as either a positive or negative....sometimes I look at it as both. It was more of a dig at myself, not trying to boast! I guess that is a caveat of live broadcasts......"haters gonna hate." I'm ready., I got this...BRING IT! HAHAHAHA!<br />
<br />
Although, this was my first scope and was semi-nervous; I am seriously looking forwards to sharing quite a bit. Watching your own video is a little funny too...I asked myself, "Do I ready sound like that?" or "Huhhhhhh, did I just make that face?!" Time to reflect......<br />
<br />
Anyways..... would love for you to check it out and join me on yet another adventure.<br />

I felt a little silly asking my TpT seller friends so that I didn't sound crazy; so I asked my third grade unit at work. All they did was rave about it!<br />
<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
So I decided to give it a try! My students were struggling with rounding to the nearest 10 and 100.<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both;">
<br /></div>
</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgnpTo0JaRvVgZJ3eGv0_KjBDDwbBu52uhafluwh_QmonUGB4eAiEYP-HeYzD4-IByqLzQZDNB1HMlJD0_TDHbBtnrEa3QO-Nxn2ilLMwVguaD0ygiPyIquxMyaeaB2ldRUEoVEbfhfSuVc/s640/blogger-image--63648834.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="clear: right; float: right; margin-bottom: 1em; margin-left: 1em;"><img border="0" height="320" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgnpTo0JaRvVgZJ3eGv0_KjBDDwbBu52uhafluwh_QmonUGB4eAiEYP-HeYzD4-IByqLzQZDNB1HMlJD0_TDHbBtnrEa3QO-Nxn2ilLMwVguaD0ygiPyIquxMyaeaB2ldRUEoVEbfhfSuVc/s320/blogger-image--63648834.jpg" width="240" /></a>This was a great activity to get the students up and moving. Our curriculum is so fast paced... Yet I decided to slow it down a bit as this is a skill they will be using in math in future grades and even in life! </div>
<div class="" style="clear: both;">
The students loved it! This is how I played.... Students were to get up out of their seats. When I yelled to begin, they are to flip over the task card at their desk and write down their answer on the provided answer sheet. After they have written their answer, they are to flip cards back over. Once I yell "SCOOT" ( about every 30 seconds), they are move onto the next desk, flip over that card and solve. I tried to make this as uniform as possible in my classroom, by having students go to all of the student desks' at their group and then as a group move onto the next set of desks. But that is totally up to you. I have even spread out the cards around the classroom for the students to find. I love that the students have to think quickly, but I would adapt the time depending on the skill they are working on. Since this skill was rounding, I only gave about 30 seconds for the students to complete each card; making it roughly about a 10 minute game for my students. The pictured cards are ones I found on Super Teacher Worksheets; but I have since created my own scoot cards.....VALENTINE'S STYLE! </div>

<br /></div>
After seeing posts about printing on sticky notes over the years, I finally decided to try it out for myself. I was planning for an observation and was trying to think of ways for students to review the plot of a story they were familiar with. As I knew I was being observed, I wanted to spruce it up a little. So I thought.... This was just the thing I needed to do! For me it was super easy, all I did was set up a template in Power Point. With the template, I typed up information about a story to complete a story map I made with my class. The students loved reading the sticky notes and allowing them to get them out of their seats and placing the notes on the story map. It was actually great because the students had discussion about the story and even gave valid points when they disagreed on sections of the plot. <br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgs_AUG0ejWAOoCBz9uMkv0qH7KG2SXHO7DgOdwbHALPEnLV73iPmjCDMhqW2KHsbfIFFPsRXOY8EeB0jjr_H17BGUPyhB07m3Xswdgey-hkwrQOkivP4zYDkfHw16SsyUsr7dp35LQKLek/s640/blogger-image--340922687.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="320" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgs_AUG0ejWAOoCBz9uMkv0qH7KG2SXHO7DgOdwbHALPEnLV73iPmjCDMhqW2KHsbfIFFPsRXOY8EeB0jjr_H17BGUPyhB07m3Xswdgey-hkwrQOkivP4zYDkfHw16SsyUsr7dp35LQKLek/s320/blogger-image--340922687.jpg" width="240" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
I printed out all of the templates first. As it was my first time doing this, I wanted to make sure that everything lined up correctly. From the printed page, I placed sticky notes over each box, and printed again. That is it! Voila! A total time saver!</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
For independent work, I had students continue to work on reading passages and highlighting the literary elements in different colors. I was able to print these out on color and send with the students to their seats, so I could easily move onto working with my other guided reading group here! </div>

<span style="font-family: "georgia" , "times new roman" , serif;">Science is one of my favorite subjects to teach! Without fail, every year, my students get so excited about Science; not sure if it's the subject matter or the fact that it is less pressure than Math and ELA. Either way, this unit always makes my students want to learn more! They will read all of the space related books we have in our library, share any information they learned with excitement and</span></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<span style="font-family: "georgia" , "times new roman" , serif;">even research more at home! This just makes my heart smile! </span></div>

As someone who lifts weights, it is almost instinctive to hold a barbell or dumbbell a certain way depending on your exercise. For example, when you want to do a deadlift, most people grab the barbell with palms facing down or away from you (overhand grip); considered the classic grip. During this grip, you tend to be working the muscles in your forearm, your shoulders and your back muscles.<br />
<br />
The underhand grip is mostly used when working the biceps, since that area will have to work the most to lift the weight. Your palms are facing up/towards you in this type of grip. <br />
<br />
These two grips are the most common. Often times, I would see people holding a barbell with a mixed grip, one hand with an overhand grip and the other with an underhand grip. I would mainly see Crossfitters with this grip. That made me think; was I doing something wrong?! So I looked into it. <br />
<br />
The mixed grip is used for a deadlift. When typically using an overhand grip, as the weight gets heavier, the barbell would be known to slip from a weightlifters hands. Some use a weightlifting strap, which is wrapped around your wrist and around the barbell to help it from slipping away from you, prior to targeting the muscles/areas that you want to work. But, they should not always be used. Using straps is a whole other debate in and of itself. To avoid the slipping and using straps, a lot of weightlifters use the mixed grip. Again, this is to help the bar from slipping away from you. Basically, if it starts to slip, it slips into the other hand. This grips allows for you to lift heavier weights. It is important to add that every time you perform a deadlift, you should NOT to use the mixed grip. Use only when it is necessary. Another type of grip that is known to help the bar from slipping from your hands is called the hook grip. Typically with an overhand grip, you wrap your fingers around the bar and place your thumb over your fingers. In a hook grip, it is actually the opposite. The thumbs grip the bar first and the first couple of fingers lay over the thumb. <br />
<br />
I hope this information helped you. Different grips work different areas of your body. The mixed and hook grip with help you lift heavier weights without having the bar slip away from you as easily. If after using this grip, and you can't perform the exercise for the area that you want to target then something is wrong. It could be your posture or simply that the weights are too heavy for you. <div class="" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
These days, it's not surprising that as teachers we can't celebrate just one hoilday this winter. </div>
<div class="" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
Probably, like many of you, I work in a district that includes a variety of backgrounds. That being said, we can't just focus on one holiday, but we would have to focus on many! In my classroom, my co-teacher and I try to incorporate different kinds of these holidays to be politically correct. Everything now is labeled "<i>holiday</i>." My school has a Holiday Show, Holiday Parties, Holiday Concerts, etc.... </div>
<div class="" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
For our holiday party, we incorporate different holidays through stations. We have <i>Pin the Nose on Rudolph,</i> the <i>Dreidel Game</i>, and an <i>informational text Kwanzaa coloring book</i>. </div>
<div class="" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
Those of you that are elementary teachers know how crazy December can be. The best way to describe it, is that it's like a month of full moons. Often times, we need ideas to allow us teachers to survive through it all!</div>
<div class="" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
During this time of year,<i> Elf on the Shelf</i> for Christmas has been very popular, as well as <i>Mensch on a Bench</i> for Hanukkah with parents. To play off of those successes on the home front, why not incorporate something similar into our classroom?! Enter, <i>Snowman is the PLAN</i>!</div>
<div class="" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
Another one of my co-workers also loved the idea, so she went out on a search to find us a wintery character that we could use in our classrooms. What she found were cute little snowmen; perfect for our winter holiday theme. This worked so well in the classroom in terms of keeping the students on track with our daily routine. Our third graders love it so much, that in past years they write letters to our snowman, have made him a home, have made him accessories; just to name a few! </div>

<div class="" style="clear: both;">
I have created a (colored/B&W) letter for the students that is generic, that students can read or have read to them. The gist is that Old Man Winter has sent this snowman down to be on the lookout for good and some not so good behavior. Our snowman will report back to the Arctic on a daily basis and the weather depends on on how well they behave. Just like the other figures; if you touch him, he will melt and lose his magic. Students must also name their Snowman to be unique to our classroom. I'm rooting for <i>Lee from Room 23</i>. I also created a goodbye letter to present to the students prior to the holiday break to let them know that the snowman must go back. The best part is that the product if FREE!<br />
<br />
Check it out here: <br />

<div class="separator" style="clear: both;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both;">
Some of our hiding spots have been between the books. One of my favorites is the snowman that created an array for the students to solve. Multiplication is a huge math topic for our third graders, so I definitely wanted to incorporate that. We also wonder how many inches it will snow this winter (based on our behavior)?! My co-teacher and I try to relate his activities to things we are doing in the classroom currently, or even earlier in the school year as a review. </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgaKCY6PyUrv4WHrQ0b6yq3GoHF2f68Klz44n7bqEK6Mnc_SKy_nqN2845HdhVaZBKUbJJ_IN-ThTajv2H8XHl8ol5dxicRBH_aGR52nIvE_6HcpG4exoWQPrGG6be0eplnuUhPZmm4v5wb/s1600/blogger-image-1355646064.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="clear: left; margin-bottom: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgaKCY6PyUrv4WHrQ0b6yq3GoHF2f68Klz44n7bqEK6Mnc_SKy_nqN2845HdhVaZBKUbJJ_IN-ThTajv2H8XHl8ol5dxicRBH_aGR52nIvE_6HcpG4exoWQPrGG6be0eplnuUhPZmm4v5wb/s640/blogger-image-1355646064.jpg" /></a></div>
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both;">
There is also a generic letter having the snowman saying goodbye to the class! This is the perfect way to get your students stay behaved during all of the holiday madness! I hope this can give you a bit of sanity to get through the month.</div>

Yup, earn credits. These credits can be used towards your future purchases. Twenty credits count as one dollar and can be used as if it were a coupon/coupon code. For every dollar you spend, you earn a credit. For example, if you were to purchase my <a href="https://www.teacherspayteachers.com/Product/Introduction-to-Multiplication-and-Division-TASK-CARDS-2235798">task cards</a> for introducing multiplication and division for $3; then you would earn 3 credits. <br />
<br />
If you didn't know this, you MUST do it NOW! (Don't forget that #CYBERMONDAY deals are going on now and tomorrow!!) All you have to do is go to your <i>My Purchases</i> tab under <i>My TpT </i>drop down, when you are logged in on TpT. Under the title of each purchase, is a yellow star for you to provide feedback. Click on that link, rate the product and leave a comment! That's it. You just earned credits to be used towards future purchases! <br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiIXTnj4UnYh7gPNab9LOIapmZDX-4RS84-pTQl5TrmYYlXwsdYpxXOGpl85cMf8DlhyAcf9Cp_BmZT6RUAWxVTPoZ3BILLlf2fm3LbkXp8-KsyQih1aD5sGAAtkTThaa6tMhFTgZjHr8Qd/s1600/cyberSmileSale_NovDec2015_banner_c.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="40" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiIXTnj4UnYh7gPNab9LOIapmZDX-4RS84-pTQl5TrmYYlXwsdYpxXOGpl85cMf8DlhyAcf9Cp_BmZT6RUAWxVTPoZ3BILLlf2fm3LbkXp8-KsyQih1aD5sGAAtkTThaa6tMhFTgZjHr8Qd/s320/cyberSmileSale_NovDec2015_banner_c.jpg" width="320" /></a></div>
<br />
Leaving feedback not only earns you credits which equates to dollars, but you are also helping out the teacher seller. The more feedback a seller receives, the better it looks for a buyer. Believe it or not, sellers only get 10% of their buyers leaving feedback. When you see the number of ratings of a product (Ex: 7 ratings), that is the number of feedback the seller received, not how many people actually bought the product. So your feedback really does help! It even helps if you provide feedback on free products that you downloaded. Teacher sellers thank you!<br />

Not only that, but something that the students can do independently! I've done this activity for sometime, and for all subject areas. It's so easy to do too!<br />
<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
First, all you need are strips of paper, index cards, or anything you can write on and cut up. If I am creating the review. I write a question on one side of the index card or strip of paper and the answer on the other side. After doing that, I cut zig zags, wavy lines, a combo of both and so on separating the question and answer! I do this for all of the cards, but vary my cut for each. This way it creates a puzzle piece and the two fit together! If students are doubts this with me, I shuffle up cards and place questions on one side and answers of the other. Students read the questions first and try to find the answer! If it doesn't fit together like a puzzle piece , then the answer is incorrect and students will try again!<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhDg7bvHUNhJIYnlCOZkN5H4sWtVKYzjvadMrJ2J7M3yfoUe0k4sGCSeAttXtDtkrAlYEFRD8VkZYpbheV1nqliWZ5bwA8czk2CF1YjlFVgeutFBeg4fV31W1dXmQHa22iLmjP2JWf-F7w5/s640/blogger-image--233471369.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhDg7bvHUNhJIYnlCOZkN5H4sWtVKYzjvadMrJ2J7M3yfoUe0k4sGCSeAttXtDtkrAlYEFRD8VkZYpbheV1nqliWZ5bwA8czk2CF1YjlFVgeutFBeg4fV31W1dXmQHa22iLmjP2JWf-F7w5/s640/blogger-image--233471369.jpg" /></a></div>
</div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
I particularly like this as a center activity. Students are able to check their answers and answer questions they struggle with. If you want to go the extra mile, you can even use the same color marker for the question and answers that match that will help students that struggle even more. </div>

Not only is it great for review, it's a great way for students to make and practice their fact families, study new vocabulary, and easy enough for them to create in their own at home!<br />

My students loved it! They even wanted to create their own questions for their book review. I know it may not be anything new, but simple ideas work too! I am now on a mission to create templates of these puzzle strips for my TpT store...... Stay tuned! </div>

<span style="font-family: Georgia, Times New Roman, serif;">I am so excited to partner up with Doc Running from <i>Everything Education </i>and other wonderful math teachers to share some Math Treats. From the looks of it; I may be one of the only elementary level teachers that is participating in this blog hop. Although this may be true, my experience as a sixth grade math teacher knows that a few of my "treats" are acceptable and have been used successfully in most if not all grade levels. </span><br />

<b><span style="font-family: Georgia, Times New Roman, serif;"><br /></span></b>
<span style="font-family: Georgia, Times New Roman, serif;">
All of my students love task cards. I have utilized task cards in a variety of ways. Most often, I use task cards as a scavenger hunt in my classroom. Depending on their level; I hide my task cards very well; or in more conspicuous places. Depending on the skill I am targeting, I either have students work individually or with a partner. The latter tends to happen the most in my classroom. can be heterogenous or homogeneously grouped. Not only are the students up and out of their seats, but they are having fun and completing/practicing math problems along the way. The scavenger hunt idea is used mainly as a review of the skill or topic most recently addressed. </span><br />

During guided math; I also use task cards as a center activity. This activity is done independently, so it is primarily a review of previously taught topics or a skill that needs continued practice throughout the school year. I do this so that I know that students can work independently and quietly while I am working with a small group of students. Additionally, task cards have been used in my class for earlier finishers.</span><br />

<span style="font-family: Georgia, Times New Roman, serif;"><b>"Treat" #2: Choice boards </b> </span><br />
<span style="font-family: Georgia, Times New Roman, serif;"><br /></span>
<span style="font-family: Georgia, Times New Roman, serif;">For every topic or unit of study that is being completed; the students are given a choice board. This choice board allows the students to pick activities they would like to complete when they are not meeting with me during our guided math time. It is a great way to differentiate activities to meet the needs of all of your students. The choice board is posted in the classroom but a copy is also given to each student to keep and reference back to if needed. The board if actually a 3 box by 3 box grid, like a bingo board with the center box being a "free space". This allows for eight different activities for the students to complete. Each choice board is given by topic; so it may seem like coming up with eight different activities is a lot of work, but it's all relative because it is not changed weekly but rather every two or three weeks. </span><br />
<span style="font-family: Georgia, Times New Roman, serif;"><br /></span>
<span style="font-family: Georgia, Times New Roman, serif;">There are certain assignments that I want students to complete throughout the topic, I label them MUST DO's. Meaning that the students must do two (at maximum) of the activities listed on the board before the end of the topic assessment. All of the other activities (six of them) are available for them to complete. Depending on the activity, students may be given bonus points on that topic test if they complete the activity, or even given a homework pass. I have used a choice board in both my sixth and third grade math classes and have had very little trouble having the students "buy in" to the idea. They love having the option of the work they want to do. Let me stress though, that the activities provided are not "busy work" but rather, meaningful activities. </span><br />

<span style="font-family: Georgia, Times New Roman, serif;"><b><br /></b></span>
<span style="font-family: Georgia, Times New Roman, serif;">
I have posted about this in the past; but it's so great that it is worth mentioning again. I actually found the idea of Pinterest. It's a game that I thought would be great to motivate my students. W<span style="background-color: white; color: #222222;">ith the Common Core Standards in place; the pacing of our Math curriculum has become insane. There is so much to cover within a given time period. This often makes it difficult for mastery of this skills because we are often have to go on to the next skill or topic. Being that this has been this way for a while, my awesome co-teacher and I decided that we needed to switch some things up and add some more fun to math. Our students needed to be motivated in order for them to want to learn and enjoy math. Enter Grudgeball.</span></span><br />

Each groups had five rows of four X's, for a total of 20 X's under each group. We also set up a "basket" and shooting lines. (Think of a two and three pointer in basketball.) we used an empty trash can and walked 10 feet away from the basket and placed a piece of tape on the floor for the first shoot line and a second piece of tape about another foot or two from the first taped line.</span><span style="font-family: Georgia, Times New Roman, serif;"> </span><br />

<div style="color: #222222;">
<span style="font-family: Georgia, Times New Roman, serif;">At the start of the game, we explained the rules and stressed that we will go in group order to answer the questions. The group will answer their question, and the other groups need to agree or disagree. If they agree students one student in the group gets to shoot a ball (we like one that can't bounce and is fairly small; about the size of a baseball or softball). That student can decide if they want to shoot for two extra points or three extra points (based on taped lines on the floor). If a student misses the basket, but answers the question correctly they can erase two (2) X's from any group/team they want. They can split their points into different groups. If they get the basket from the first taped line on the floor, they can erase four X's and if they get a basket from the second taped line, they can erase five X's. If the group gets the question wrong, they do not get to erase any X;s and we move onto the next group. The students are very competitive and it becomes a fun battle as to who will erase from which of the teams. Often times, they majority of the teams go against one, or teams align with one another. Once a team no longer has X's, they have to start adding X's back, following the same point value rules. This continues on until the end of the review questions. Again, the team with the most X's wins.</span></div>

<span style="font-family: Georgia, Times New Roman, serif;">The students absolutely LOVED this game. I mean, really LOVED. I hadn't seen my students so excited about math. I think the competitive nature of the game gets the students hooked; and promotes students collaborating. This was a Pinterest tried and true success! I hope you can find a way to incorporate it into your classroom too!</span><br />

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
This past week, I had a student say that no teacher ever made him feel the way that I made him feel that day. To back track a bit, this student is a very quirky one. He has friends, yet he can be very immature, make silly voices, and annoy others. This student believes that Disney characters are real, is obsessed with Star Wars and even asked if we can watch one of the movies on his birthday and was quite disappointed,almost shocked, when I told him that we could not fit it into our schedule. </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
This student tends to struggle paying attention in a whole class setting. If you are a teacher, you know how you feel after you get asked the same question that you answered 10 times before they even asked. He was that student. I always felt that I was on repeat. But that day last week, made me see a whole other side to him. In our guided reading group, we are reading one of the <i>Judy Moody</i> books and I saw this student come alive. He had a sparkle in his eye that I hadn't yet seen from him. As a kid that struggles staying with the whole class discussion, I was so happy to see him shine in a small group. Excited to see him completely engaged in our activity, I kept asking him his thoughts on our novel. The book is a bit humorous and has some silly parts, such as a musical toilet bowl. This student created and sang a song that he felt would come from the musical toilet bowl. Totally creative and off the cuff; my heart smiled that he was so into the book. His song made me and his peers laugh so hard. But what touched me was what he said afterwards. </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
This student told me that I was the first teacher to ever laugh at his jokes. My heart had been smiling, and now was a bit broken from what he said to me. He said that everyone told him his jokes were silly and stupid. I can't believe this. First, I hope it isn't true. Secondly, all I know is that I made him feel respected and appreciated. Something as little as a laugh; and I feel that we now have a connection. </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
I thought that this needed to be posted. Not to necessarily praise myself, but to bring attention to the little things. You never realize how important you are to a child, until one says what this student said to me. We need to realize that a "good morning" might be the only one he/she hears in a day. These are my tips to make your students feel extra special. </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<span style="font-size: large;">1. I think one of the most important thing to do with all students is to build a relationship with every one of them. </span></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
Get to know what interests them outside of school. Students will feel special that you are interested in things they do. This is important to do with all students, even the most difficult and will keep you from having issues with them in the future. I also ask students to give me their schedule for upcoming sporting events or activities that they are involved in. I like to attend these events, again to show them that I care. For those of you that can't possibly do that, try to ask them how things went back in school. </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<span style="font-size: large;">2. Praise students for even the smallest of things. </span></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<span style="font-size: large;"><br /></span></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
One thing I have found that makes an impression is putting Post-It Notes on a students desk praising them for the little things. "<i>Great job participating yesterday!," "Thanks for being a role model for the rest of the class." "I loved that you helped clean up the room yesterday."</i> <i>" Great job practicing your multiplication facts." </i>Little handwritten notes go a long way. It is definitely a great confidence booster for students, and perfect for the student that starts "slipping" in class. </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<span style="font-size: large;">3. Be specific with praise. Avoid just using simple praise, such as "Good Job!"</span></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<span style="font-size: large;"><br /></span></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
Be specific in what you praise them on. For example, I often say, "I like how you used pictures to solve your problem." "i love how you explain your answer in detail." " I love that you supported your answer with evidence from the text." " I love how John is quiet in line." It can be specific for students, but I especially like it to bring attention to other students that are not doing what they should be doing. It kills two birds with one stone; praising one student and letting others know what your expectations are.</div>

By far my absolute favorite is Bikini Body Guide (BBG) by Kayla Itsines. Kayla is from Australia and studied at the Australian Institute of Fitness where she became a AIF Master Trainer. She became famous by using social media, such as Instagram and Facebook and posting the wonderful transformations of her clients. <br />

<br />
<br />
This program isn't just for women that want to lose weight, but women that want to become lean, strong and the best they can be. The workouts consist of resistance training, cardio training and stretching. Kayla has BBG 1.0 and BBG 2.0; each of which is twelve weeks. The resistance portion is done in circuits. Each day consists of two rounds of two different circuits. For each circuit, you have to complete the four exercises as many times as possible in seven minutes. The total workout is about a half hour. You are to complete these circuits three times a week. On the other days of the week, Kayla wants you to do low intensity work; what she called LISS. <br />
<br />
This workout can be done at home (within minimal equipment...dumbbells, medicine balls, chairs/benches) or at the gym. I sweat like a pig so doing these exercises at home is for me. Thus far, this exercise has made me the leanest I've ever been and I noticed a big difference. But I will say that I also continue my other classes at the gym too. I just love spin and my weight lifting classes too much! These HIIT (high intensity) circuits have helped me make the most change. I am actually on my second round of 1.0. This time around, I hope to go from BBG 1.0 to 2.0 for a total of 24 weeks. When I first started BBG, I was lucky if I could get through two rounds of the circuit within seven minutes. Now, I can do the same activities in four rounds within the seven minutes. <br />

My normal Saturday routine is going to the gym and take a body pump class. I'm not talking, your 5 or 10 pound free weights; I'm talking about barbell lifting. Many women are afraid of lifting weights due to the fear of becoming "bulky"; but we simply don't have the level of testosterone needed to bulk up like guys do. The girls that are bodybuilders probably are taking hormone supplements, and training specifically to get that bulk. <br />
<br />
<span style="-webkit-text-size-adjust: auto; background-color: rgba(255, 255, 255, 0);">
In researching this for myself, I learned that if you lift weights, you can have more effective fat loss. Additionally, the more muscles that you have, the more your metabolism speeds up and the more calories you will burn at rest. Here is a great website that I found, that even provides videos of how to effectively complete some of these moves. www.bodybuilding.com/.../<b>why-women-should-lift-weights</b></span><br />
<br />
Since taking these classes, I have seen more definition in my muscles (as little as they are...LOL). Seeing this progress (not perfection) has had its benefits for me. I feel ten times stronger than I was in my 20s, increased my energy levels, and increased my overall confidence. Now, I don't feel like a tool going out onto the weight room floor with free weights or the machines. I don't feel silly lifting in front of the guys either. I honestly feel that you attract people when you exude confidence.<br />
<br />
You can start small to see what you can handle. I suggest either trying a class or going with someone that can assist you. The weights I lift now are double the size, if not more, than my initial lifting weight. Everyone starts somewhere! Try adding some routines to <br />
